How to be a Good Stand-up Comedian

By The Comedy Club on November 26, 2008 at 1:53 pm | Filed under Comedian - Comedians

Comedy Club Audience LaughingGreat comedians are not born! They develop their art and hone their skills to deliver the boring moments of everyday life in the most humourous and funniest form. If you can present small incidences and the life around you in a humourous and funny form, you will be able to make the audience laugh easily.

Do you know that apart from having a good joke and a good audience, you need to time your performance too? Don’t tell a joke that is too small or tell a joke that is 10 minutes long. Your joke should be long enough for the audience to understand and laugh. Before switching on to next joke, stop till the laughter dies down! This way your audience will not miss the key points!

Have lots of presence of mind! Your ability to have presence of mind will make you a great stand-up comedian. If you can think of the most hilarious replies or create a joke out of the situation in hand, then you will have a laughing audience all around you enjoying their night out at a Comedy Club or private event.
Practice telling jokes in small groups of people as well! Take a mental note of their reactions. You can always modify the joke for larger audience. If you keep a mental poll about the joke, you will be able to give better a performance the next time you are on stage.

Learn to try different genres of jokes or funny stories. As with many top TV comedians, your style can be typical that can become your identity but your jokes should always cover different topics. You can always adopt a style that would make you famous! The style can be a way of dressing, a body gesture, a vocal sound or anything that would become an identity with your personality. In the end, you should remember that it should be funny and it should be able to put a smile on anyone’s face.

Whenever you face a large audience, it is always good to walk the stage like the famous comedians do! This will accomplish two tasks. One, if you have any nervousness or stage fright, it would hide it! Secondly, if you keep walking the stage, you will be able to interact with all the audience, even those sitting at the back or on the side of the stage. Standing on one spot may make some audience uninterested in your performance showing that you are not interested in them.

Persistence is the key to your success. You constantly need to improve upon your style as a new comedian and your jokes. You must have a burning desire to learn new things and adopt different attitude to deliver the joke in the best form.

Some subjects never get old, like blonde jokes! You can constantly invent new jokes around them and yet they will always be hilarious. However, if you tell a joke about Pablo Picasso, it may not as interesting as a joke on Tom Cruise, Angelina Jolie or Brad Pitt! Keep your topics contemporary, it will keep your audience engaged and laughing for a long time!

Remember, Rome was not built in one day! Similarly, you cannot develop an act or a skit instantly. It takes time and perseverance to develop the best act that is remembered by the people for several years and this journey creates the backbone of many top comedians on TV and on the Comedy Circuit today.

How to become a Stand-Up Comedian II

By The Comedy Club on November 26, 2008 at 1:43 pm | Filed under Comedian - Comedians

Laughing Comedy Club AudienceStand-up comedy is an art just like music, painting or dancing. Not everyone possesses the ability to “be funny.” It is an art that comes with your own powerful sense of humour that gets fine tuned with human interactions in person and on stage.

If you possess a good sense of humour and have the ability to perform in front of the audience, you can be a good stand-up comedian. Comedians create humour out of everyday life and the life around them. The Greatest stand-up comedians and their acts often carry small notes and incidences from everyday life. Learn to observe things with deep thought and you will learn to create the lightest note from the deepest observation!
