A DAD who entered the world of stand-up for a dare will be one of the acts appearing at the Comedy Club in Roydon.
Gerry Kyei (pronounced ‘Chay’), who goes by the stage name of Gerry K, will be performing at Roydon Mill Leisure Park on July 12.
The 42-year-old describes his act as “anecdotal”.
He said: “The sort of tag line, I guess, would be: ‘It’s all about me’. I start from the very beginning, being a black kid growing up in a white town near Colchester.
“It’s all very tongue in cheek. I move on to families, the wife and kids, and then talk about observational and topical stuff.”
The father of four took to the spotlight after being dared by a colleague to enter an open mic competition.
He did not win, but he was good enough to secure a paid spot at the venue.
Gerry has now been working in the comedy field, part-time, in addition to his full-time job in publishing, for six years, and has featured at prestigious sites across the UK.
He said: “I love nothing better than - just for a little while, anyway - being at the centre of people’s worlds and making them laugh. It’s a lovely feeling.”
Gerry has worked with one of comedy’s most famous faces, Jimmy Carr, on his Idol DVD.
He said: “Jimmy was a nice guy, very pleasant and very humble, bearing in mind his status.”
However, it is Harry Hill who has earned the position of Gerry’s favourite comedian.
“He’s genius,” said Gerry. “He’s so clever. He makes things funny that shouldn’t be.”
Joining Gerry will be Scotsman Brian Higgins, who talks of his “loony childhood” and life’s ups and downs.
The trio is completed by Richard Morton, a regular on Channel 5 and winner of the Time Out comedy award.
