Comedian Biog: Ricky Grover
Comedy should generate a frisson; it should feel like something unusual is happening. Ricky Grover’s partly autobiographical show comes in three parts, each one as jagged as it is funny. He is a stand-up with a story worth telling. Grover grew up in London’s East End, where he served time as an armed robber, a hairdresser, a boxer and a self-help Svengali - so he has a hinterland of experiences to draw on.
One-time boxer, RICKY GROVER has spent a lifetime putting East London on the comedy map. A true stand-up great, some of his greatest routines include the Diet Coke break, Nessum Dorma and many more. A star of film and TV, he starred alongside Johnny Vaughan in ‘Orrible and has also appeared in Black Books, Red Dwarf and on the 11 O’Clock Show. Indeed, so successful was his 11 O’Clock Show creation of East End gangster Bulla that Michael Parkinson invited the character rather than Ricky on to his chat show.
An award winning actor and writer, Ricky is a highly versatile performer able to flit between powerful drama and hilarious comedy. Born and bred in the East End of London, Ricky was an ex champion boxer and hairdresser before taking the comedy scene by storm.
Ricky can regularly be seen in films, and primetime TV in straight and comedic roles, or headlining at all major UK and international comedy venues and corporate events. His numerous TV credits include, Black Books and Red Dwarf, as well as co-starring in cult BBC2 series ‘Orrible’, written by and starring, Johnny Vaughn.
His best known and loved character role is Bulla - gangster and social commentator - star of the 11 o’clock show. Such is his popularity, that Michael Parkinson personally requested Bulla for an in-depth chat on his show, though he had trouble keeping a straight face! Bulla continues to be an opinion former, writing a monthly column on Front magazine.
As a prolific writer, Ricky has written and starred in three short films, receiving international acclaim. The UK released Punch won him the prestigious ‘Silver Bear Award’ and Hungry, broadcast on Channel 4, won him the ‘Best Actor Award’ at the Brest Film Festival. His latest film, Therapy, is currently in production.
In August 2002, Ricky took his one-man sell out show to Edinburgh, followed by a highly successful national tour.
