By The Comedy Club on July 30, 2008 at 12:23 pm | Filed under The Comedy Club News

A DOUBLE DOSE OF ‘HEALTHY’ COMEDY
WITH JOHN RYAN

LAUGHTER REALLY IS THE BEST MEDICINE WITH
HURT UNTIL IT LAUGHS – THIS AWARD WINNING SHOW PONDERS THE MYSTERIOUS QUESTION, WHY DO MEN HATE GOING TO THE DOCTOR?
GILDED BALLOON, 12TH & 13TH AUGUST, 6.45PM

John Ryan’s Hurt Until It Laughs is a warts and all performance aimed at changing men’s perceptions of seeking medical help.
For many men the thought of discussing their problems is a nightmare but with John’s comedic approach to raising awareness it’s more ‘share’ than ‘scare’, with a whole lot of laughs along the way.

John is partial to the odd fry up and doesn’t claim to be a model of male fitness but he still wants to know what makes men so scared to discuss health problems and why men hate going to the doctor?

Hurt Until It Laughs will try to answer these questions and more with a trail of hilarious anecdotes and observations in this award-winning comedy show.

DOES BEING A DAD DRIVE YOU MENTAL?
JOHN RYAN HAS THE ANSWERS!
‘THOSE YOUNGMINDS’ – A UNIQUE AND HILARIOUS COMEDY SHOW ABOUT FATHERHOOD
GILDED BALLOON, 14TH & 15TH AUGUST 2008, 6.45PM

John Ryan’s Those YoungMinds, is an innovative comedy show aimed at encouraging fathers to take a more active role in their child’s development.  The show premiered at Leicester Comedy Festival in February this year and was one of the festivals most talked about events.

In Those YoungMinds John uncovers the truth about the trials and tribulations of being a dad. After in-depth investigations and many hours in the pub, John will be serving up some anecdotes and antidotes to dealing with the good, the bad and the ugly sides of Fatherhood. Those YoungMinds promises to strike a chord with Dads everywhere.

Those YoungMinds is commissioned by YoungMinds - the only British charity specialising in children’s mental health and wellbeing; Those YoungMinds, is, in Ryan’s own words, “about breaking down barriers”.

As well as performing at Leicester Comedy Festival, John Ryan has performed at health conferences and events as well as working with the inmates of Gartree Prison.

A month long comedy spectacle unparalleled in the entertainment industry, The Edinburgh Fringe attracts comedians from all over the world, boasting a huge programme of over 700 shows and bursting with stand-up talent.

As the UK’s market leading comedy provider, The Comedy Club will be in the thick of the Fringe searching for the stars of tomorrow so you can enjoy their talent today. Who? What? Where? Ay? Aaah!
The Edinburgh Fringe not only supports new comedians vying for their big break into TV, nor is it just for the comedy buff. Star studded shows at infamous venues including the Gilded Balloon, The Assembly and The Pleasance include Jimmy Carr’s Joke Technician, Ed Byrne’s Different Class and Omid Djalili’s Live 2008 ensure the comedy shows remain accessible for 1st time visitors and packed with hidden comedy gems for the festival regulars.

Weird & Wonderful Shows
Amid the sea of visitors and comedy club fans, we will have our ears and elbows to the ground separating the wheat from the chaff, the worthy from the worthless and the sublime from the stupid. One thing is always guaranteed from comedians at the Fringe though and that is a raft of ridiculously named comedy shows and comedians with grand ideas. Our favourites include:

Rhod Gilbert: And the Award Winning Mince Pie
Alun Cochrane: Owner of a Shed. And a Son
Rob Deering: Boobs 2008
Lloyd Langford: Not a Lover, Not a Fighter

Record Attendances
Comedy Club insiders are predicting attendance figures over the milestone 1 miilion visitor mark which is fantastic news for the future of the event. Based on these figures it is anticipated way in excess of 1.5million tickets will be sold for individual stand up comedy shows at the Fringe, and you can’t mock and joke about those figures!

Edinburgh Awards – if.comedy
Highly coveted amongst comedians, an if.comedy (previously Perrier Awards) award or nomination can be a big step in a comedian’s career. Epitomising this, previous winners include Lee Evans, Jenny Éclair and Al Murray who have all gone on to celebrate huge success with National Tours, TV shows and international recognition.

We know the ‘big 4’ comedians and shows to watch at this year’s Fringe but place your bets in the office and we’ll see who nails it on the head. Visit The Comedy Club at www.hahaheehee.com for continuous updates on the comedy Fringe throughout August, keeping you in the loop with all the inside information and latest comedian gossip.

If you are travelling to Edinburgh Comedy Festival, have a great time but remember this valuable tip: Many misguided visitors believe cycling is a great way to see a huge variety of shows around Edinburgh, BEWARE! Edinburgh is a very hilly city and scattered in bicycle graveyards…this is no coincidence!

Chambers & Nettleton @ Camden Comedy Festival

By The Comedy Club on July 30, 2008 at 9:05 am | Filed under The Comedy Club News

Chambers & Nettleton at Camden FestivalCHAMBERS and NETTLETON : It’s a double act thing

“Divine and very funny” (Time Out)

Lynn Chambers and Sally Nettleton are that rarest of things on the comedy circuit; a double act, and they’ll be giving an insight into their double act life in their new show at this years Camden Fringe.

(5-9 August, 9pm, Etcetera Theatre, 265 Camden High Street, London NW1 7BU)

Not only one of the few double acts in stand-up, Chambers and Nettleton are the only female double act cutting it in the male dominated environment that is the live UK comedy circuit.

It’s an odd-couple relationship, Lynn is organized, self important and thinks she’s in charge; Sally is the spoiler, the wheedler who gets things her own way by being a constant distraction and frustration to Lynn.  They bounce off each other with natural ease and have an extraordinary rapport that is winning them enthusiastic fans across the country.

Both northerners, Lynn from County Durham and Sally from Wensleydale, they met as performers at a Medieval Banquet (Lynn had just left her husband and Sally had just left drama school), and quickly became mates, then flatmates.  Soon people were telling them they were funny and a natural double act, so they started out on the stand up circuit.

Their ninth gig saw them at the Hackney Empire final in 1999 and they’ve since had three successful runs at the Edinburgh Fringe, numerous TV and radio appearances, and are tipped for the top. “They’ll surely make prime time TV” (Time Out)

Before comedy their paths in entertainment were quite different.  Having left her job as PR Manager for Flymo (yes, lawnmowers were her life), Lynn sailed the world with P&O as a singer, performer and writer of comedy revue – don’t mention the sparkly frock.  Sally went from drama school into acting, began improvising characters and then into stand-up.

Jerry Lewis called his partnership with Dean Martin a love affair.  Eric said when Ernie wasn’t beside him he felt a cold draft.  So what makes a double act tick?  Come along to the Camden Fringe this August and find out.

Tickets £7.50 - Booking office: 0844 477 1000 or www.ticketweb.com

Ends.
